PLB to help unlock eight centuries of King's Lynn history

Heritage and design consultancy, PLB, has secured a contract to revitalise the Town Hall and Gaol House of King’s Lynn revealing hundreds of years of the town’s history through its archives and objects.

The North Yorkshire firm has been appointed as exhibition designer to work on behalf of the Borough Council of King’s Lynn and West Norfolk to open up its archives, which until now have not been very accessible to the public, and tell the stories of its people.

The contract follows the Borough Council of King’s Lynn and West Norfolk securing a Heritage Lottery Fund First Round Pass to develop a ‘Stories of King’s Lynn’ project. PLB has been appointed to design a major exhibition proposed as part of the Round 2 HLF bid which will seek funding to transform the levels of public access, participation and use of the Town Hall complex, including Trinity Guildhall and the three story Gaol House.

PLB exhibition design work will bring to life the stories from King’s Lynn seafarers to merchants, explorers to adventurers, mayors to magistrates. The exhibition will draw on the outstanding archives of King’s Lynn as well as the Regalia and silver collections of the borough and help create a sustainable high quality heritage resource central to the life of its local community.

Says Sarah Oswald, project director at PLB, “This is a hugely important bid for King’s Lynn. Our work will help paint a picture of the town through the years through the eyes of the community whose lives are recorded and reflected in the Town Hall’s archives and collections. We will also consider how this project will link with other heritage sites across the town to provide sustainable connections, enabling visitors to build a fuller picture of the town’s heritage.

“Over many centuries, King’s Lynn’s Town Hall complex was the heart of the town’s cultural and social life. Our role is to help the Borough transform access and interpretation to open up this wealth of history, build on the local pride and make the complex once again the centre of town life with a wider appeal amongst new audiences, including tourists and young people.”

PLB’s exhibition design work is part of a full grant application which will be submitted later this year. If successful, PLB will implement its exhibition design plans put forward for the application.

This project adds to PLB’s portfolio of Heritage Lottery Fund bid projects, where the company’s interpretation and design work has helped local authorities and partners secure funding for major heritage schemes. See for details of schemes in which the firm has been involved.
