At PLB, we believe sustainability isn’t just a buzzword - it’s a responsibility.
That’s why, in partnership with Greener Museums, we launched our Greener Design Initiative back in May 2011. This innovative approach, piloted at Prittlewell Priory in collaboration with Southend-on-Sea Borough Council, brings a sustainable lens to exhibition design, ensuring a balanced focus on environmental, economic and social factors.

What is Greener Design?
Our initiative revolves around creating heritage projects that don’t compromise the future. By integrating sustainability into every stage, we aim to strike a balance between protecting the environment, supporting economic growth and fostering social wellbeing.
Our Vision
With over 30 years of experience, PLB is proud to be a forward-thinking creative consultancy, dedicated to sustainability within the heritage and tourism sectors. By embedding sustainable practices into every project, we contribute to long-term wealth generation for our clients and communities.
How Does It Work?
The Greener Design Initiative uses a four-step process to ensure every exhibition is developed with sustainability at its heart:
- Supplier Assessment: Suppliers are evaluated on environmental criteria and added to our approved sustainable suppliers list.
- Collaborative Visioning: We work closely with museums to align with their sustainability goals.
- Sustainable Tendering: Tender processes prioritise suppliers who share the museum’s sustainable vision.
- Exhibition-Level Benchmarks: Designs are assessed at key stages using criteria such as material sustainability, energy efficiency and potential for re-use and recycling.
This rigorous approach highlights opportunities to improve sustainability while balancing environmental, economic and social priorities.
Measurable Impact
Through benchmarking, we evaluate materials, transportation, energy usage, durability and flexibility. Each decision is guided by a commitment to reducing environmental impact while delivering long-lasting, fit-for-purpose designs.
Our Greener Design Initiative, alongside our Environmental Policy, ensures sustainability is embedded throughout our work. Together, we’re creating exhibitions that inspire, educate, and protect our planet for future generations.
