From Death Rays to Saturn’s Rings

On 24th September 1937, RAF Bawdsey became the first fully operational radar centre in the world, and on 1st April 2018 the station officially opened as a visitor attraction after a £1.4 million redevelopment following a successful HLF funding bid supported by PLB. Working collaboratively with volunteers, PLB then provided exhibition design and build services to create an interactive exhibition, which tells the story of Radar from its developmental stage to modern day applications.

Sharing Best Practice

Mary Wain, Chair of Bawdsey Radar Trust, and Jamie McCall, PLB’s Creative Director have been invited to provide a talk, at this year’s Museums and Heritage Show, to share the lessons learnt during the project from both the volunteers’ and designers’ perspectives.

“We didn’t really understand it is all about the visitor experience”, said Mary in preparation for the talk,
“looking back we have learnt so much from working with PLB”

The talk on 17th May covers topics including:

  • Communication
  • Managing Change
  • New Confidence
  • Budget

“It is important to PLB to support volunteer organisations and share learning within the sector,
in order to demystify the process and allow organisations to recognise the full skill set of their teams.
The talk is therefore the perfect platform to impart lessons and tips from both viewpoints”, said Jamie.
