All Saints North Street – Unveiling Hidden Stories

Dating back to the 9th century, All Saints Church is a historic gem nestled on the River Ouse in the heart of York.

PLB collaborated closely with the project steering group and engaged local community groups to shape a vibrant and inclusive vision for the church’s future.

Showcasing treasures with respect

The activity plan revealed widespread interest in the church’s renowned medieval stained-glass windows. Building on this, we developed an interpretive design that showcases these treasures while respecting the building’s heritage and maintaining its role as a place of worship.

Key features of the scheme include:

  • Colour-Coded Cards: Highlighting the story behind each stained-glass window, paired with translucent prints that emphasise their striking colours.
  • Freestanding Signage and Trails: Including a dedicated children’s trail to engage younger visitors.
  • Digital Enhancements: A robust online presence featuring event streaming, AV links, and downloadable teaching resources.

The result is an engaging visitor experience that uncovers hidden stories, celebrates the church’s unique character, and supports its dual function as a sacred space and community hub. The project is designed to attract both locals and tourists, ensuring All Saints Church remains a cherished part of York’s heritage for generations to come.
