Exploring the origins of passenger rail
PLB, collaborating with specialists, transformed this historic rail site into an immersive experience celebrating the industrial and social history of rail through interpretive displays, digital media, public art, and interactive exhibits. Set within Darlington’s preserved rail buildings and goods yard, the museum merges local history with interactive elements for an engaging family experience.
Highlighting Darlington’s legacy as the birthplace of the Stockton and Darlington Railway, the world’s first public steam-powered railway in 1825, PLB’s design integrates Skerne Bridge and the surrounding historic area through multimedia displays and themed zones.
Creating an inclusive experience

To enhance the experience, PLB designed ‘Experiment!’- a 12-person immersive time-travel journey featuring a 21.5m wrap-around screen and 4D effects. Led by characters Georgie and Stephen, visitors explore the origins of rail in Darlington and its global impact on transportation.
