Audley End House
New access and interpretation improve the visitor experience
This Strategy, design and delivery contract for English Heritage required PLB’s team to sympathetically reinterpret and provide new orientation for one of England’s grandest stately homes. We designed subtle, freestanding wooden interpretation points for each room, which were then built by specialist craftsmen.
New Public Access
Rooms such as the Nursery Suite and the quirky Coal Gallery, previously not accessible to the public, were opened up to improve the visitor’s journey through the country house, with interactive displays exploring life from 17th-century The interpretation within the Coal Gallery enabled hands-on exploration of the working household, whilst the Nursery included bespoke children’s games previously played with by Lord Braybrooke’s eight children and an exact replica of the original dolls house, with furniture we commissioned from a leading film prop making company.

“The nursery floor was fascinating, and filled with modern children playing with toys of the past.”
