Bawdsey Radar

Bawdsey Radar

Bawdsey was the world’s first operational Radar station and the historic visitor attraction tells the amazing story of its development in 1935 to present day, to how radar now impacts on our everyday lives.

PLB provided advice and support to the Trust for a successful Round 2 HLF funding bid and the exhibition design scheme, which included interpretative planning for both the visitor centre and external areas of this unique building.

PLB completed the project as a design and build contract, managing all contractors and specialist suppliers on behalf of the trust, in time for its official opening.

The interactive displays tell the stories of the people who worked at the station, the development of Radar and the community surrounding the area. A simulation experience allows you to ‘track’ aircraft with WW2 Radar and a real-time illustration of air traffic control shows the power of Radar today. The visitor experience is run by a hugely dedicated and knowledgeable band of volunteers. A headline in a recent edition of the East Anglian Daily Times stated that the ‘Freshly refurbished Bawdsey Radar Station could be Suffolk’s must-see attraction of 2018’.
