National Coal Mining Museum for England
PLB created a series of separate exhibitions for the museum’s temporary exhibitions programme
The Secret Life of the Coal Traders
Aimed at a family audience, the displays transport the visitor on an interactive journey from the mines of the North East to the London Coal Exchange. We provided full design services, including publicity material, production and build services for a quick turnaround from the previous exhibition. The design and delivery scheme was created in such a way that it could be reused by partner organisations after it had closed at NCM, with sections then delivered across the UK.
The Bevin Boys in Yorkshire
This exhibition featured the impressive work of artist Martin Hill, who worked in the Sheffield and Barnsley Coal Mines. It was commissioned to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Bevin Boy scheme, which conscripted men to serve their country underground rather than on the battlefields. Along with interpretive planning, design and delivery of the exhibition, we provided promotional materials and also enhancements within the existing main galleries to improve the overall visitor experience.
