Fashion, form and the changing ideal

PLB were commissioned to redesign and redisplay four rooms in the upper galleries of York Castle Museum, housed within a former debtors’ and women’s prison – both Grade I listed buildings. The result? A striking exhibition exploring 500 years of changing body shapes and beauty ideals.

Bringing fashion’s story to life

Refurbished display cases enhance lighting and safeguard the museum’s valuable costume collection, while a seamless blend of low-tech and digital interactives invites visitors to engage with historical fashion. Oral histories and contemporary interviews spark meaningful conversations, challenging perceptions of the ‘perfect body.’

Where fashion meets function

A bespoke catwalk runs the length of the gallery, serving as a multi-functional space. By day, it supports dressing-up activities and museum programmes; by night, it transforms into an atmospheric venue for corporate and community events. This innovative approach appeals to the museum’s established family audience while successfully attracting a younger demographic.
